Just got this question through my site, and I thought I would share the answer...

hello melanie!

I have to buy new mtb pedals and wondered if you have suggestions. I am debating between the eggbeaters, which are only 266g, but are so much differents from the other pedals, the time atac xs carbon and the shimano 959.
do you have recommendations or experience with some of them?
What tires will you race in maui?

thank you very much in advance, i appreciate your efforts!
aloha,
marion

Hi Marion,

Ok for Maui, I have won on the Larson TTs both front and rear. Those are the front runners for this year's Maui assault. I am also considering the Ranchero... but haven't fully decided yet.

As far as pedals, I don't think any pedal is as bombproof and reliable as a Shimano 959. The pedals last forever no matter what you put them through. If you want to buy ONE set of pedals that last years of bikes... those are the only ones to go with. Functionally other pedals are okay, but none compare to the longevity of Shimano products. I didn't like the Time pedals, I found that the cleats wore out very quickly. The Eggbeaters fall apart. Conrad wrecked those at Worlds two years ago and he is part of a list of athletes that have wrecked those pedals. I dunno if they are any good this year or not.

I'd have to agree with Mel's advice. Only suggestion I'll make is get the Shimano 540s over the 959s. They are essentially the same pedal with the same corrosion resistant materials. The 959s are double the price and are only a couple grams lighter!
