Hi, Mel. I have a Mavic Crossmax SLR ( 1520 g ) and i would like to know your opinion about a new set up.
Do you think i can trust in a carbon rim wheel ( not for Maui, of course )? I am a 70 kg rider.
And about ceramic bearings hubs ? besides being lighter do you think they are better than the conventional ones ?
These two upgrades will reduce almost 250 g on my bike... 120 g of rotating weight ( carbon rims ).
Thanks and good season. See you on Maui, Luiz.

Hi Luiz,

I think a carbon rim would be fine but maybe you want to have "training" wheels and "racing" wheels. I would run the carbon rims in Maui as well because they will withstand the course there.. the tires get a beating more than your rim would.

With regards to ceramic bearings, I don't think those have the longevity of other bearings but they are VERY smooth. Maybe, again, for a big race you may spend some money doing these little add ons but for the rest of the year, maybe not.

I think a light tubeless setup will be great, carbon or no carbon. Rotating weight is bad but again, for Maui we put so much goop in the tires to prevent punctures weight is no longer saved. I think an overall reliable, light setup on a bike you feel comfortable on is perfect.. then focus on STRONG legs!

Happy training!

Mel

Thanks, Mel. Hey, think about XTERRA Brazil in August... warm water, Technical course, lots of climbing and the best party... ask Candy. Bye, Luiz.
