Yet another tires question! 2 Years, 4 Months ago Karma: 0
Hey Melanie,
This season has been pretty good so far as I've managed to qualify for the Nationals and the Worlds.
However, I still sort puzzled on the choice of tires for those 2 races (right now I'm set up with Mavic Crossmax & Michelin XCR All Terrain). For Tahoe, I think you mentioned Maxxis Larson TT in a previous post, but what about Maui ?
Also, here is a dumb question, during races, I carry some sort of sealant w/ inflator in case I have a flat. I've never had to use it, so I'm wondering if I do use it, is it possible to flat again on the same tire ? If yes can you inflate the same tire w/ more sealant ? What are the other options to fix a flat w/ tubeless tires?

Thanks Mel!
see ya in Tahoe

I think for Maui you might want a tire with a bit more tread coverage mostly to prevent punctures from thorns. More tread means more tire to protect you. In Tahoe, you could run a semi slick as long as it is a bit fatter to help you surf the sandy sections. I wouldn't advise semislicks in Hawaii not because you couldn't roll fast with them, but more for the puncture protection.

An inflator that contains sealant, which is a Big Air with slimy/latex sealant stuff in it... it like running Stan's inside a UST tire. If you don't have latex in your tires, you could use the cannistor to help seal small punctures. The latex is a liquid substance with small particles that will block small holes in the rubber. As the air runs out the particles will gather at the hole and dry up, thus sealing the puncture. These will not help if you have a large tear, like in your sidewall, for example. If you have a more serious problem with your tire, you might need a piece of duct tape over the tear and a tube to put inside the tire because the tire can not seal if the hole is too large. In that case you will need to remove your tubeless valve and run your wheels with regular tubes to get to the end of the bike course.

I usually run UST tires with stronger sidewalls and put the latex in them as added insurance.
